A Step-By-Step Guide On Stuffing and Filling Your Couch Cushions

Over time, your couch or sofa will lose its comfort, looks, and even its support. This is because the foam insert within the seat cushions tend to compress and break down with repeated use. Now, this is just a natural cycle that will happen to every couch – leaving you with sagging cushions. However, you can counter this and make your couch feel and look like new simply by replacing the old inserts with new ones that you can make without even having to use special tools. Here is a guide that will walk you through the process step-by-step.

The Foam Insert

The first thing that you’ll need to do is to open the cushion cover and remove the cushions that you are planning to replace. Measure each cushions cover to the fullest extent in three dimensions: width, depth, and height. These three are integral to finding the right type of foam insert. If you would like, you can also add an extra inch to make a more firm and plump cushion.

You will then cut a piece of foam according to the dimensions. You can cut it yourself using a serrated knife, from a sheet of foam that is the same thickness as the height that you previously measured. For an easier task, you can also preorder foam that has already been cut to the dimensions that you specified.

Compression and Stuffing

First, place the batting-wrapped foam piece inside a trash bag. Then, place the nozzle of your vacuum cleaner hose against the foam at the top of the trash bag. You’ll want to gather the plastic bag around the vacuum nozzle and holg it tightly with one hand. Then, turn on the vacuum cleaner. The foam will start to compress and flatten to just an inch or two thick. Remove the vacuum nozzle while holding on to the plastic to ensure that no air gets in.

Next, place the compressed insert within the cushion cover, align the front, side, and back of the insert with the cover.  You’ll want to release the hold on the bag so air can enter. The foam will then begin to expand. When it starts to reach the cover, tear away the trash bag and pull out the pieces until you remove them all. Adjust the alignment for each section and place the cushion filling back into the covers.

Your cushion replacement is now completed and your sofa should look like it is brand new and straight from the store.
