Measurements Needed to Replace a Door

With any home improvement project, it’s important to take precise measurements. But this is especially true when it comes to installing a new front door. Even the slightest error in a measurement can result in a door that is drafty or doesn’t close at all. If you know the measurements of your old door, it’s easy to determine which size door you need. But if you don’t know this information, you’ll need to measure your new door yourself.

So what do you need to measure in order to get a door that fits well? Here are a few of the measurements that you’ll need to make:

Jamb Width: You don’t want to need jamb extensions to make your interior trim fit flush with the wall. Make sure you measure from the backside of the exterior trim to the backside of the interior trim to ensure this doesn’t happen.

Rough Opening: This is the hole in a wall into which your door will be installed. To get this measurement, you’ll need to remove the interior trim and measure the height from the top of the opening to the bottom of the sill and the width between framing members.

One thing to keep in mind if you do have the ability to measure your old door: you’ll need to round up to the next inch in order to ensure that you’re getting the right sized replacement door. For example, if your old door is 79-1/2″ tall by 35-1/4″ wide, you’ll need to get a replacement door that is 80” tall and 36” wide.
