Consider PEI rating when choosing a floor tile

Over the last several years, porcelain has become more popular as a residential flooring option. Porcelain is much more dense than ceramic and therefore, absorption is less. The frost resistant porcelain makes it a good tile for outdoor use. One advantage of porcelain compared to ceramic tile is the color and pattern which stays same throughout the tile. But the problem is less than five percent of tiles are true porcelain and others contain a porcelain body. When the glazed porcelain chipped, the non-glazed body is exposed creating a problem. The quality of ceramic tile depends on the density. Therefore, a good, dense ceramic tile could make a better choice for indoors.

Regardless of the material, attention shall be given to the glazing of the tile. Glaring is based on PEI rate and PEI of one chips and scratch easily and therefore, used on walls. PEI rating of two is good for light residential use such as bathrooms. A PEI three rated tile is good for all other residential uses and commercial areas should use PEI rating of four or higher. Price of glazed porcelain as well as ceramic is based on PEI rating and higher rate will cost you more.
