How to Properly Install a Door
The act of hanging a door can be considered a true skill of carpentry. Though we take them for granted, doors are precise instruments that must clear their frame, the jamb and have interlocking parts that secure the door in its place. It’s crucial that a door receive proper alignment to allow it to operate efficiently. These steps are aimed at helping anyone properly install a door.
Level the Opening
Using a contractor’s level, balance the hinge side of the door with the latch side. You can use shims under the jamb of the door to try and balance out any imperfections. Use a finish nail to tack down any shims that you use. Also measure the openings at the top, middle and bottom of the door to be sure that they are the same width apart.
Plot the Hinges
Using a tape measure, measure out the length and width of your hinge. Measure up from the floor to get the right locations for the hinges, and use a contractor’s pencil to mark them on the door frame. You will also need to install the trimmer for the door, which is about 1/8 inch thick pieces of shimming. Tack the shims to the wall with a finishing nail, then use a utility knife to trim the excess. You should have shims that are flush with the door frame.
You will need to lift the door and walk it into the opening you’ve created. If the door rests flush with the wall, tack some finish nails through the two hinge locations. If the door is not flush with the wall, you will need to adjust the shims behind the door until it fits properly.
