In the past few decades, the popularity of seagrass furniture has grown immensely. One of the reasons is that the reed has a shiny, tough and smooth texture which is very easy to maintain. It is also resistant to stains.  It was actually created for indoor use, but is now very popular as outdoor furniture.

Most seagrass furniture is made from ocean reeds exported around the world by the chinese. It is woven by either machine or hand. This is done when the plants are still green. When the weaving is complete, the reeds are dried where they go from green to red and become rigid.

Here are a few tips on looking after seagrass furniture:

They need to be protected from rain and rough weather. During rainy season, at the same time you put away your patio furniture cushions, make sure they are covered with an outdoor cover.

When it comes to cleaning everyday, use a dry soft cloth and clean in the direction of the reeds. For tougher grit use a brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner and make sure to clean it carefully.

Make sure that nobody stands or leans on the furniture. Seagrass is weaker than wood or metal furniture and so will break or get damaged with too much stress.

Keep away from direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure will cause it to fade. For keeping it looking new, a regular varnish will suffice.
