The different types of outdoor cushion foam
Written by The Foam Factory
There are various metrics that a purchase of foam should be based on. There is the density, which is the most important. Then there is how much it takes to compress and how resilient it is. There are also several types of foam to choose from, so before buying a cushion replacement, look through this list:
Compressed polyester
This is not actually a foam but is a highly compressed polyester that can be considered an alternative to foam. Unlike traditional foam, this will not disintegrate or go yellow but does have a high likelihood of compressing over time.
Polyester fiberfill
This is a common stuffing for pillows. Just like the compressed polyester, it is not foam but blown polyester fibers. Generally, pillow protectors have fiberfill which is then inserted into pillows and cushions. Some cushion replacement material will be fiberfill.
Polyurethane Foam
This is an affordable type of foam that often will have biocide treatment. This treatment prevents mold and mildew from forming due to moisture exposure. This is most commonly used on boats.
Open cell foam
This type of foam has open pores that allow air and water to flow through very easily. This type of foam is perfect for cool seating cushions or mattresses due to its high levels of comfort. When combined with an outdoor cushion fabric, it is almost maintenance free.
