What is wicker
Written by Wicker Paradise
Wicker is actually the name given to the woven style itself. It comes from the scandinavian word that means “to bend”. Some think that wicker refers to furniture made from a specific plant, when in fact as long as it falls into the braided pattern, almost any material can be considered furniture.
Wicker gets it appeal from the texture and appearance from the weave. The wicker chairs made from newer, synthetic materials have a more uniform look because it is easier to weave consistently due to the materials. Older wicker was made from a paper based fiber. Anyone who has antique wicker furniture probably has a paper based fiber set. This is why older wicker frays easily and needs regular maintenance and painting.
When it comes to color, the older wicker furniture tends to lean towards the more natural, unpainted look. The more modern sets you will find now will be either white, black (or a darker color) or a pastel shade. You will see a lot of the modern sets at beachside resorts. For the interior of a home, darker colors work best. For shabby chic style homes and sunrooms white wicker works very well. It is the proliferation of the darker and white wicker furniture sets that has caused the recent renewed popularity.
